20,000 Page Views Last 30 Days
We finally crossed 20,000 page views in 30 days on the main site I am focusing on right now.
Considering I hadn’t touched the site in a year and only started posting on the site again 1 month ago, I think this is fairly reasonable growth. Here’s what growth looks like from January 1st.
Page views have been stagnant as trending content dies down. Now we have some traction I am starting to add more evergreen content to the site for more sustainable growth.
A combination of evergreen and fresh content is the play I am making right now. If you want to learn more about my fresh content strategy, check out last week’s edition of the newsletter.
Plan Big, Start Niche
For today’s tip on building a niche site, I want to discuss how you should think about your site from Day 1. On my previous Niche Site, I made a pretty big mistake that could have been avoided.
I chose a domain name that was simply too niche. Once I had published around 600-700 posts I found out very quickly that I was running into a wall to expand further.
When starting out you should start out with a broad domain name, but a niche selection of content.
This gives you the ability to endlessly expand in the future but also start with a tight silo of content that ranks easily in the beginning. Aim for topical authority in a sub-niche first, then start expanding to different sub-niches in the future.
This can all be done under the umbrella of a broad domain. You can then utilize the authority you have built under one domain to expand into shoulder niches.
For Example:
If you want to start a site about labradors don’t create a domain name with labrador in the name.
Instead, start a site such as:
aboutdogs .com
Or you might even go further and start a site:
aboutpets .com
You can still write the first 200 articles on labradors but this gives you room to expand into other dog breeds later down the line or even other pets if you decide to go that broad.
Ultimately, do not corner yourself into too small of a niche in the early days of your website.
Ezoic EPMVs
Since adding Ezoic premium to one of the sites last week I have seen a slight increase in EPMVs. Previously the site was getting around $1.50 - $2.40 EPMV.
We are now consistently getting over $3. We do also have to pay a fee to Ezoic so this EPMV is artificially high, however, overall we are coming out with a better EPMV.
From what I have seen on past sites and this site so far, I believe that adding premium to your website will boost your normal earnings and the additional premium earnings.
Overall, this EPMV is still atrocious and honestly, the blog wouldn’t be worth running at this rate. I’m still holding out for Mediavine to provide much better RPMs.
From what I have seen in the past, we should be able to get $15 - 20 RPMs which would make the blog much more profitable.
Even at a $15 RPM we would already be making $300 per month vs the $50 or so we are making right now. The grind continues to push out more content on this site and get it to Mediavine.
